I'm completely reeling from this cool Chicana that I read about in the back page of Utne! She is so like me, it's scary! First of all, she has the same last name as me! She's a librarian who publishes her own zine. She has this totally down-to-earth, indie rock style. She's based in Chicago, which is a city that I would like to go to in the future to be a part of the huge Mexican community there. She is the child of immigrants. She's totally into radical political action and community activism. She's crazy about books, zines, and information. She even wears a shirt in the picture that has the same logo as mine! The logo looks like this:
That last one was the last straw! I mean this woman has totally taken my life! What I want to do and my interests are so similar to this woman's, that it's creepy. I'm still working to finish my undergrad degree but I plan on going to library school for post-grad education. I'm pretty politically motivated and interested in community activism. Needless to say, I've found a new heroine.
I googled her zine title, I Dreamed I Was Assertive!, and found out that she used to live in Tampa, as well. The facts were too eerily similar to mine. She has her email address listed in the magazine, so I'm gonna email her! I don't know what I'll say but "Hey, you're just like me!" I am always estatic when I discover more fellow Chicanos or Latinos doing some interesting shit. I can only hope that I fulfill all the goals that I have for my life... I never want to settle for conformity.
